Denkwege zur Transzendenz


Beschäftigten sich Klies Arbeiten bis 2021 vorwiegend mit der„ Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit“ - und zwar im Kontext rationaler postmoderner Ansätze, erweiterte er seine Betrachtung bereits in der Ausstellung „UND SO UNENDLICH WEITER“ von 2021 auf die „Konstruktionen an der Grenze“, die sich nach Grenzerfahrungen einstellen. Es geht also um Denkwege, die sich „angesichts des Unsichtbaren“ entwickelt und eröffnet haben. Glauben, Magie, Esoterik und Okkultismus als Phänomene der conditio humana rückten stärker in den Fokus. Doch ebenso wie die wissenschaftliche Arbeit, die neue Horizonte ausleuchtet, gern an der Grenze steht, steht auch die romantische Weltbetrachtung dort. Sie anerkennt, betrachtet und wertschätzt, was im Nebel liegt – aber beide verbindet das Bedürfnis, Grenzen zu erfahren, zu überschreiten und dieses Erlebnis für sich nutzbar zu machen.


Transzendenz, das ist das Überschreiten oder Übersteigen von Grenzen, insbesondere der sinnlich erfahrbaren Welt hin zu etwas Höherem oder Jenseitigem, also in Bereiche jenseits möglicher Erfahrungen. Das Transzendieren ist ein universeller Antrieb, im guten wie im schlechten Sinne. Wichtige Eck- und Anknüpfungspunkte ergeben sich in Klies Arbeiten durch den Blick in die Historie. Er betrachtet die Entwicklung von Denkwegen und ihre Konstruktion in all den Disziplinen, in denen das Transzendente seinen Platz hat.


Wissenschaft auf der einen Seite, Irrationalismus auf der anderen? Hier regelbasiertes Handeln, dort weltfremde Ideale? Die Bruchlinien der Gegenwartsdeutung verlaufen offenbar entlang der Gegenüberstellung von Aufklärung und Romantik und werden in seinen Fotoarbeiten, Installationen und Büchern zum Thema.

Paths of Thought Towards Transcendence


Whilst Klies’s works up to 2021 dealt primarily with the ‘construction of reality’ – specifically within the context of rational postmodern approaches – he had already broadened his focus in the 2021 exhibition ‘AND SO INFINITELY FURTHER’ to include the ‘constructions at the boundary’ that emerge following borderline experiences. It is therefore a matter of lines of thought that have developed and opened up “in the face of the invisible”. Faith, magic, esotericism and occultism, as phenomena of the human condition, came more sharply into focus. Yet just as scientific work that illuminates new horizons tends to stand at the frontier, so too does the Romantic view of the world. It acknowledges, observes and values what lies in the mist – but both are united by the need to experience boundaries, to transcend them, and to make this experience work for oneself.


Transcendence is the act of crossing or surmounting boundaries, particularly from the sensually perceptible world towards something higher or otherworldly, that is, into realms beyond possible experience. Transcendence is a universal drive, in both a positive and a negative sense. Important cornerstones and points of reference emerge in Klies’s work through a look at history. He examines the development of lines of thought and their construction across all the disciplines in which the transcendent has its place.

Science on the one hand, irrationalism on the other? Rule-based action on the one hand, utopian ideals on the other? The fault lines in our interpretation of the present seem to run along the divide between the Enlightenment and Romanticism, and this becomes the subject of his photographic works, installations and books.
